Newsflashes for the remainder of 2008

I have some news items, for those following along at home, and I’ve been too lazy to make a concerted effort at notifying everyone. So here are a few bulletin items to get everyone up to date before the calendar changes for another year.

1. We sold our company at the end of October to our biggest competitor. Now we are gazillion-jillion-aires. Well, not really. Let it suffice to say that we can’t settle into a full, fat happy retirement just yet, but Sami will without a doubt be able to afford to go to college.

2. That said, I have left my job as the daily bookkeeper. My colleague and friend Molly has stayed on to carry out day to day tasks but the bulk of finance duties have been assumed by the finance department of the parent company.

Yup, I’m a kept woman. Actually, I have some ideas for how to occupy my time going forward, and I’ll mention some of those plans in the works below.

3. I’m converting to Judaism. After a lengthy talk with my mom, I can now rest assured that my family knows what’s going on enough that I feel comfortable adding this to my list of bloggable topics. We found our synagogue as a result of our preschool search for Sami last year, and are totally in love with the community.

4. Talk is on the table with my friend and future partner-in-crime Amy to start a food and farming related non profit organization. There is so much unused green space even within congested city centers, and our focus will be to encourage urban agriculture and subsidize household gardens in low-income communities. It is so important for people to reconnect with the roots of our food and farming, to know that vegetables aren’t just products you buy shrink-wrapped at the market and that you CAN grow your own food, if not in full than at least in part.

5. While that is still in the planning phase, I’m looking at spending more time volunteering around Sami’s school. It’s important for me to keep myself busy and out of trouble until I have a more concrete time commitment to the non profit, and the place that Sami spends her days is very important to me as well. Anything I can do to make it a better, happier place will come back to benefit me in the end.

6. Since this has turned from a list of groundbreaking news items to a list of general topics I’m not saying a lot about, I’ll also include that I plan to spend some more time spinning, knitting and reading. Hopefully I haven’t overcommitted myself just yet and will be able to do this without sacrificing family time or other obligations.
